If a book come from the heart,
it will contrive to reach other hearts.
— Thomas Carlyle
Anne J. Barthel Editorial collaborates with authors, agents, and publishers to turn promising works in progress into powerful books. We draw on nearly twenty years of experience in acquisitions, development, and marketing to see what a book needs—from line editing to restructuring—and help it reach its potential.
"Editing is the same thing as quarreling with writers," Harold Ross of The New Yorker once said. We’d say it’s not so much a quarrel as a partnership. To us, editing means helping a book find its form and get its message across while staying true to the author’s vision and voice. We specialize in working closely and empathetically with authors across a wide range of nonfiction, from memoir to spirituality to personal development. We look at editing the way André Gide thought about reading: "To read a writer is for me not merely to get an idea of what he says, but to go off with him, and travel in his company."
Anne J. Barthel has spent two decades in trade publishing in New York and Chicago, most recently as executive editor at Sterling Publishing Co, Inc. She founded Anne J. Barthel Editorial in 2007 to focus on working closely with words and writers, serving clients from first-time authors to professional journalists to agents and publishers on both sides of the Atlantic.

I can think of no more skilled hands, mind, or heart into which I could entrust my words."
